In the alphabetical index
just below are
fishes I have kept myself,
at one time or
another. I've included
some stuff about their
general behavior, their
diet, and their breeding
requirements, because if
your fish don't
spawn, you always feel
that you aren't doing
something right. At the
end of each entry,
I've tried to include links
to the best material
about these fishes at other
sites.
In the menu at the left, the families follow
the usual order you'll find them in, when
you look into a book about fishes. It doesn't
hurt to think of them grouped together in
this family way. To know that a fish is a
Cichlid gives you a whole set of expectations,
some of which may actually be a helpful guide.
If it's a Characin, for example, you don't
expect it to stake out a territory or care
for its young. (Sure, Copella arnoldi is a spectacular exception.) If it's a Cyprinid,
you know it's an egglayer, even if its scientific
name is Barbus "viviparus", and you know it won't have an adipose fin.
But you may just be looking for an
Alphabetical index of fishes at this site. The following freshwater tropical fishes
